Prosper In The Beginning
As reported in the official Prosper Website, the first settlers arrived in the area in 1846 because of the black fertile soil in North Texas where their cotton flourished. Between 1850 and 1902, two settlements made up what is now The Town of Prosper, Texas. One, two miles south of what is now Prosper, was called Rock Hill. The other, one mile north, called Richland.
When the St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad came to the area in 1902, the two cities were forced to merge, forming the Town of Prosper, making Prosper the central stop for the railroad between Dallas and Sherman. When the new Post Office was built and the town officials applied for a Post Office with the name of “Richland”, they learned that the city name already existed. Because the town had become know for its prosperous crops, the name Prosper was suggested and the Town of Prosper was incorporated in 1914. With the introduction of light industry in the early 1980’s, the rest became history.
